Texturing

Originally I was meant to UV map the characters , Howver I was caught up with many other aspects of the projetc and didn't have time, In the end Tara stepped in and UV mapped the characters.

I painted the textures on photosphop and originally I was trying to make the marmot appear realistic, but in the end went for a far more simple look. The simple style suited our film more.

I was using various brushed to try and recreate fur, the effects were looking strong, but the style did not fit in with our film.

Tara had created the rough effect of fur on this, I then re worked it adding a contrast of light and dark adding slightly more depth to the marmot.

I then applied a filter on potoshop which gave an intersting effect and we ended up keeping this as the final texture.

.............................................................................................................................................

Here is the process of how I ended up making the final texture for the man, I wanted it to match my original Concept.

End result of man Texture.

I was pleased with the cartoony look, I would have liked slightly more detail, but the priority now was on the animation.

Here are some animated films which I was inspired by

http://groupblogba.blogspot.com/p/animated-films.html

............................................................................................
Our film at this stage was behind schedule,  If there were any concerns It was always my responsibility as the Director to address the issues and find ways of resolving them, I would regular have meetings with Tara and both of us would discuss any problems with the film.

We had a lack of completed animation and all felt it would not be fair to hold the entire animation of the film on just Hayley alone. We therfore decided to recruit some more animators.

Rob Bowels, James Waters and Lilly Black were the three animators we got in contact through email, all of them were in their second year and all seemed eager to be a part of this film.

This is Rob's Text that he produced for us.

Lilly was very busy and failed to produce us a run cycle.

This is the result James produced for us,

I decided to go with Rob as our new animator, his run had the most potential, I think James's also had potential, but we had divided the scenes up all ready and only had space for one more animator. We really appreciated the work they had produced and said thank you to everyone who produced the test pieces.

Animation.

Before the animation began we sat down as a group and composed a shot list.

Tara wrote it up and attached it to an email, as usual me and Tara would discuss, the shots and then from here devise a plan.

I had problems breaking down the last scene, as for some reason my keyboard wouldn't allow me to screen print. here is the video of all the animation that I did on this film.

Overall I was proud of the animation that I produced, It could have been polished off, but it did reflect which was shown in the animatic therefore the scenes fitted with the rest of the animation.

Modeling

I have been modeling most of the environment

Using Maya and the sculpt tool.

Me and Sam have been working closely together he has been rendering and setting up camera, I have been directing how the cameras should move. I have also been modeling the environment.

The idea of the first shot was for the camera to fly through these mountains. To create a very atmospheric and beautiful opening Shot.

Second Shot, Getting closer to the mountains about to travel through.

The environment is becoming quite interesting now, I'm getting very excited about the final outcome.

Sam created some trees in Maya which have animation applied to them, the movement adds some life to the scene.

The Making Of Snatched.

After researching various animation videos, I thought it would be a good idea to make a one minute video showing the progression of our film, from concepts to modeling to texturing, some animation, rigging and eventually a render showing the style in which we want the film to look like.

Purpose of Making of Snatched

  • Clearly demonstrate all the work we have done as a group
  • Show the development
  • Give a clear indication of what stage we are at and where we need to go.
  • Include the criteria within this video set by our Course Director Mike Smith.
The video we will be cut together by Sam Mcguire since he is the most accomplished at using After Effects and Final Cut.

I will direct the video.

Break down of Video step by step showing the progression of this short video.

  • It will begin with concept art, basic then more developed,
  • Modeling, Props, then characters, development of characters, e.g. different models to more finished models
  • UV mapping,  to test texturing, 360 spins of models,
  • rigging, examples to record tests of rig in maya.
  • Story Board. !!!!!!!
  • Animatic fades in to 3.d environment, fly through camera from rough play-blast fades into sexy render.
  • animation, does not matter if they are not final, but some runs would be good.
  • cut to a piece of music.
  • THIS WILL BE A MUCH GREATER EXAMPLE OF OUR WORK RATHER THEN WORDS WE WILL USE VISUALS.
  •
Here is the Making of Video, Directed by Me, Edited and composed By Samuel McGuire.Sam also took on board his on level of creativity he completely understood how I wanted this video to look. The result was really successful.

      Mikes Monday Crit

I sat down with Mike and showed him the animatic that me and Sam had made.

      • Improved from the last one
      • reads more clearly
      • the shots make sense
      • more funny
      • Tex avery style working
      • nothing needs to be dramatically changed.
      Improvements

      • smoke more flowing.
      • just a slight alteration in the way that the marmot enters.
      • collect sheets of Mike it will make more sense.
      • Tex avery style across the mountain speed it up.
      • like wise when the man follows.
      • delete zig zag shot
      • sliding could through in some tree perspective shots.
      • or when they run over the cliff part could make it more dramatic
      • when they fly of the cliff just change it slightly. refer to drawing sheets.
      • some close up of marmot face.
      • when Marmot enters he could tap the man on the shoulder.
      • cliff scene could track them then reveal the mountain.
      • when climbing one OTS shot marmot looking scared.
      • last scene re do e.g. when man is about to eat eagle swoops in and bam ending.

      Animatic Update for group.

      Latest Animatic Further Changes.

Animatic Short from Samuel McGuire on Vimeo.

After the more final version of the animatic we made the last few changes and now were finally ready to make this movie. :)

All of us had been struggling up until this point. The animatic was getting chopped and changed. Everyone seemed slightly nervous about the film. I decided that I wanted to collaborate with Sam, so we both met up at my house and we worked on the animatic for two days solid. It was an extremely positive experience, and having someone else as an second opinion helped a great deal. I drew out all the frames while Sam drew out all the backgrounds, we decided what worked and what didn't.

From this point on, the whole film changed and we went from strength to strength the team became one working unit, and I think this helped as the majority of us were in ever day five times a week.

      Parts to change.

      • title scene needs to appear just as the mountains fade. they have to be gone.
      • When the marmot sneaks behind make him fade in and out with dust cloud as if he is darting from right to left.
      • when the man looks round when it snaps back to the fire make his head, move.
      • before he looks round make the marmot a lot closer it will make more sense.

      • when he steals the chicken it could be faster. like a flash of speed.
      • when the marmot runs over the mountain make its faster like the tex aver reference.
      • when the man runs the speed is much more like the tex avery one.
      • the marmot trips over the rock is fine, when the man trips it needs to hold for a second more.
      • after the tip a nice angled shot could show the slope in the landscape to clearly indicate to the audience that the characters are heading down hill. show of the landscape here.
      • Zig zag shot doesn't work. Change it or maybe just delete it. yes if we delete this shot it will read more clearly...
      • when their falling in mid air slow it down so the audience can see whats happening.
      • When the climb out of the hole, I need to redraw the part after they get out of the hole, they get out and then they stumble then shoot of..
      • The almost end shot the classic Tex avery style when they run of into the distance meeting the giant mountain, should change. As we have already used a similar shot to this. since it is the last scene I think the camera should track them from the air as if trying to catch up to them, shooting through the air until the camera begins to slow and they continue to run into the distance. The camera should then cut to a seriously low angle shot which shows you the shire height of this mountain, the character could run past the camera so their feet are very large and enter from the left, Ill explain on paper Sam.
      • Then when the time lapse kicks in it will make much more sense.
      • End scene only needs minor changes.
      • the man needs to snatch the chicken spin around, and then hold it up with a big smile, camera pans out sharply once twice you hear a squark you see a perspective shot of the birds eye and beak it flys down the man is about to bite and its snatches it.
      • Characters are looking depressed, man turns smiles the end.
      • Cut to final scene.
